Lex Brodie's ends gas service

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Lex Brodie's President Scott Williams had to break the news to longtime customers today that the station is pulling the plug on its gas pumps.

Vivian Kozlowski said, "We came here and were surprised to see this already."

Norma Rathburn agreed, saying "I was disappointed, really disappointed. I had no idea they were going to be closing."

While the tire and automotive side is wrapping up a record month, keeping four gas attendants on the payroll was a losing battle.

Williams explained, "It costs a decent amount of money to have the gas attendants pump the gas. On average, it was 11 cents per gallon it was costing us."

He added that the news came as a blow to customers. Williams said, "The station has been here 50 years. There are customers that literally are stunned because they've never pumped their gas."

A nostalgic Williams filled up cars one last time. He started as a gas attendant while a Senior at Roosevelt. He explained, "We've actually been holding some impromptu gas pumping classes. You know it's kind of cute, but sad at the same time."

Lex Brodie's will phase out self serve on April 13th.

Jim Kozlowski lamented, "Now I have to scout around for another place. You don't find many gentlemen like this guy's going to help you at a lot of places."

"The attendants were really nice. That's what I'm going to miss more" said Vivian Kozlowski.

It's a sentiment shared by generations of gas customers, like radio personality Lina Girl. She said, "So convenient in the town area and you never had to fill your own gas. I loved it."

Lex Brodie's will convert the Queen Street gas pumps into 17 parking spaces for customers.
