Hawaiian Telcom seeks lease for 25 years of solar

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Hawaiian Telcom is seeking to lease solar panels to generate its own power at 78 buildings around the state.

The telcom company says in a filing with the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission that it will sign a 25-year lease with two contractors on Oahu: TSWG Solar and Sunetric. Those contractors will install and maintain solar energy systems on Hawaiian Telcom buildings on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Monday (http://bit.ly/1gIjAKO) that Hawaiian Telcom considered buying its own systems but decided on the lease. The telecom will buy 100 percent of the energy the systems generate.

Hawaiian Telcom says it expects immediate financial returns on the arrangement, with the biggest savings outside Oahu. The company hopes to sell any excess energy back to electric utilities.
