LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Complaints of a noxious odor at the Lihue Walmart resulted in a full evacuation of the store Sunday morning.

The Kauai Fire Department's HAZMAT crew conducted air monitoring throughout the store and surrounding areas but was unable to determine the cause of the odor.

Store officials evacuated the building around 11 a.m. after they received complaints from employees and customers of an unknown odor causing eye and throat irritation.

KFD's HAZMAT crew responded to the scene along with firefighters and rescuers from the Lihue station.

An investigation reports that the odor was confined to the main entryway of the store. There was no evidence or report of a chemical spill.

Officials continued to monitor and ventilate the area for about two hours before leaving the scene.

Fire officials requested the assistance of the Kauai Bus to transport seven individuals to Wilcox Hospital.

Nine individuals sought medical treatment for non-life threatening illness, including irritation and burning of the eyes and throat. All affected individuals are expected to make a full recovery.

Officials reopened Walmart around 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
