Large sinkhole opens in Wahiawa neighborhood

WAHIAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A Wahiawa family is praying for sunshine after recent rains caused a 30-foot sinkhole to open up in their front yard.

Police cornered off the area along Dole Road with crime scene tape as a precaution and have temporarily covered the sinkhole with sheet metal.

Family members say they're relieved no one was hurt. "We're hoping for a whole bunch of sun, please cooperate sun.  Hopefully it can dry up and we can fill it in with gravel and fix it up. Hopefully it never falls back down again," said Sasha Terry who lives on the property.

The hole is just steps away from the front door in the yard where Sasha Terry's 5-year-old daughter plays. Terry says the hole started out small, around two feet deep earlier this week after recent heavy rains, but collapsed into a much larger hole yesterday afternoon.

According to the family, this isn't the first time this has happened but this is the biggest the sink hole has ever gotten.

They say the area is above an old cesspool and they've been told an underground stream also runs through the property.
