Board to hear testimony in Oahu highway shooting

Toby Stangel Toby Stangel

HONOLULU (AP) - A hearing will determine how many years a man convicted of murder in a 2011 Honolulu highway shooting spree must serve before being eligible for parole.

A judge last year sentenced Toby Stangel to three consecutive life terms in prison.

His minimum sentencing hearing is scheduled Thursday. The parole board will hear testimony but a decision isn't expected immediately.

Paroles and Pardons Administrator Tommy Johnson says the parole board will publish its decision approximately two weeks after the hearing.

Stangel was convicted of the murder of Tammy Nguyen. The mother of 10 was shot while behind the wheel of a minivan at an intersection as her 16-year-old daughter watched. He then shot and injured two motorists on the H-1 Freeway, kept driving and shot at two police officers.
