Jellyfish influx closes Hanauma Bay, dozens stung

EAST HONOLULU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hanauma Bay has been closed to the public due to an influx of jellyfish.

Ocean safety officials recommended the closure after there was 50 stings in a two hour period.

"We had about 50 stings in about two hours, from about 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.We recommended a beach closure due to the fact that there was an increase in box jellyfish," said ocean safety lifeguard Shannon Clancy Tuinei.

Lifeguards will reassess the situation first thing tomorrow morning and determine if Hanauma Bay will remain closed again for another day, or if the jellyfish hazard has passed and they will open for business.
