Kauai County voting map to remain intact

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - Kauai won't draw new voting districts for electing county council members.

The county's charter review commission on Monday rejected three proposals that would have given voters the chance to split the island into districts for electing county council members.

The Garden Island newspaper reports that supporters of the measures hoped to make council members responsible to residents of specific areas.

Opponents of the idea said that creating different districts would divide the island. They said redistricting might push localized concerns ahead the island's general welfare.

Right now in Kauai, voters elect seven at-large candidates to represent the whole county.

A commissioner told the paper that none of the proposals to split the county into districts were clearly better than the system now in place.
