Trapped hikers rescued on Big Island

HONOLULU (AP) - Authorities in Hawaii say eight hikers were rescued over the weekend after they became trapped by quickly rising rivers and streams on the Big Island.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser says a rescue crew airlifted the overdue hikers to safety Sunday from Waipio Valley. Officials say the hikers were not injured.

According to officials, the hikers called for help Saturday when they became trapped by the swollen waters.

The hikers spent the night along the Hiilawe Falls Trail before they were rescued.
