Kuzminsky dominates as BaseBows take series against UAB

Trevor Podratz drove home the go ahead run in the eighth, Scott Kuzminsky nearly went the distance in his second straight game and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior baseball team topped Alabama-Birmingham 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
Kuzminsky (3-2) delivered another gem, striking out a career-high six batters and nearly tossing his second straight complete game. With the 'Bows leading by two runs in the top of the ninth and a pair of UAB runners on, Coach Trapasso lifted Kuzminsky for Juliene Jones who got the final out for his second save. In his eight and two-thirds innings, Kuzminsky gave up two runs on seven hits and issued just one base on balls.
Chase Davis and Griffen Gum both had a pair hits and one run to lead UAB (17-8). Reliever Cory Eller (1-3) was the pitcher of record for UAB, working four complete innings and allowing just one earned run on two hits.
The 'Bows trailed (12-12) on two separate occasions and didn't take their first lead until putting two runs on the board to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. Marc Flores (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) was issued a lead-off walk by Eller then took second on a Jones sac bunt. Podratz delivered a base hit on the next at bat to score Flores and put the 'Bows ahead for good.
Kuzminsky got off to a rocky start, allowing a pair of hits and a run in the first inning. The 'Bows responded right away when back-to-back base hits by Jordan Richartz (1 H, 1 R) and Flores tied the game in the bottom of the first. UAB got a run in the fourth inning but UH tied the game for the second time on Stephen Ventimilia's RBI-double in the fifth.
The Rainbow Warriors now hit the road for the second time this season, this time to open Big West Conference play. UH will face UC Santa Barbara in a three-game series beginning Friday, Mar. 28.
