Flood Advisory extended for Hilo area

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a Flood Advisory until 1:45 a.m. for the Hilo area of the Big Island of Hawaii.

Forecasters said at 10:28 p.m., the rain gage at Piihonua measured rainfall at 0.8 inch in 15 minutes. Radar showed the area of heavy rain moving to the southwest at 10 miles per hour, with satellite and radar data showing more showers will be falling over the area.

The heavy rain will cause hazardous driving conditions due to reduced visibility, roadway ponding and poor braking. Persons in the area should avoid streams, drainage ditches and other low-lying areas prone to flooding.

The flood advisory may be extended if the heavy rain persists.
