Two 16-year-old Maui hikers rescued in Kipahulu

HANA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Maui Fire officials have located the two missing 16-year-old girls who allegedly got lost while hiking in the Kipahulu area on Friday evening.

Officials located the two Maui girls shortly after 7 a.m. on Saturday on the side of a stream at the Seven Sacred Pools National Park.

MFD was notified at approximately 5:43 p.m. on Friday of two missing female hikers in the Seven Sacred Pools area. A helicopter conducted an air search while firefighters and park rangers searched on land. The helicopter discontinued its search around 7:15 p.m. due to darkness. The ground search was also called off around 8:50 p.m. Search efforts were scheduled to reconvene at first light Saturday morning.

Officials say the two girls were hiking with two adults and one juvenile male. The water in the stream apparently started rising, separating the two females from the others in the group.

According to MFD, no injuries were reported; however, officials say the two girls were very cold.
