HONOLULU - Scott Squier tied his career high of nine strikeouts but had his shortest outing of the season as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior baseball team fell 5-0 to the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
Blazer hurler Alex Luna (4-0) scattered five Hawai'i hits over seven and two-thirds innings for the win. In six complete innings of work, Squier (2-1) gave up three runs (two unearned) on five hits and was tagged with the loss.
Both pitchers were having their way with opposing hitters before UAB scored a trio of runs to take a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning. After retiring the first two batters, Squier ran into a jam when he gave up a single then issued a base on balls. Chase Davis (3-5, 1 R, 2 RBI) drove home the game's first run with a single on the next at bat, then Juliene Jones misplayed an Ivan De Jesus grounder that allowed two more runs to score.
The 'Bows (10-12) had their first real threat when they put runners at the corners in the seventh inning. Jones reached on an error, then an Adam Hurley single moved him to third with two outs. Trevor Podratz struck out swinging on the next at bat to end inning.
Matt Morse added three hits and two runs for the Blazers (17-6)
Gordon Cardenas worked the seventh and eighth innings for UH, allowing two runs on six hits with a strikeout. Josh Elms tossed a scoreless ninth.
