Hundreds packed the Waikiki Aquarium on Wednesday to celebrate its 110th anniversary.   The aquarium opened as the Honolulu Aquarium on March 19, 1904, it is the second-oldest public aquarium in the United States.

The aquarium hopes Wednesday's celebration will teach visitors about its long history in reef and sea-life conservation. "Many of the fishes and the invertebrates found around these islands are only found here, nowhere else. The islands rely upon the coral reef for the fishes that live there, for the surf breaks, for the beaches," said Andrew Rossiter, Waikiki Aquarium Director. "So, educating people in Hawaii, in a venue like this, is critical."

There were prize giveaways, live entertainment, marine-themed arts and crafts and a special $1.10 admission.

The family friendly event continues on Saturday, March 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  with the special discounted admission.

The Aquarium  showcases more than 500 marine species, and maintains more than 3,500 marine specimens. Public exhibits, education programs and research focus on the unique aquatic life of Hawai‘i and the tropical Pacific. The Aquarium welcomes more than 320,000 visitors annually
