USC women get No. 1 seed in NCAA tournament

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

For the first time in school history, the South Carolina women's basketball team (27-4, 14-2 SEC) enters the NCAA Women's Tournament as a No. 1 seed.

Coach Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks are headed to Seattle in the Stanford regional to play Cal State Northridge (18-14, 12-4 Big West) in their first tournament game on March 23.

The coach and the team learned of their fate at a selection party at Colonial Life Arena Monday night.

The women's team has now made it to the big dance for three straight seasons under Staley, a former college and WNBA star in her own time.

Staley says that number one seed is all about the respect the team has received from the college basketball world and the selection committee.

"A lot of times people don't want to give the newcomers their due and I'm glad that the committee gave someone like us, the University of South Carolina, a number one seed because it gives hope to some of those other programs who are teetering on being a very good program," said Staley. "It goes to show that if you do the work, if you put the work in, you become successful."

However, South Carolina has had limited success in NCAA Tournament play thus far. They've been as far as the Sweet Sixteen under Staley, who has a team this season that could make a deep playoff run.

But Staley and the Gamecocks will need to remain focused for their opponent. Cal State Northridge began their season with a 4-10 record, but quickly turned it around and even won their conference's tournament championship.
