Judge: Jury selection Sept. 8 for Arias penalty phase
PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -
A Maricopa County Superior Court judge set Sept. 8 for jury selection in the penalty phase of the Jodi Arias murder trial.
Judge Sherry Stephens also set an April 11 date for a sealed proceeding.
A jury convicted the 33-year-old Arias in May of first-degree murder in the 2008 death of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander.
But that jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision on her sentencing.
Arizona law keeps her murder conviction intact, but prosecutors have the option of putting on a second penalty phase with a new jury in an effort to secure a death sentence.
If the second panel fails to reach a unanimous decision, the death penalty will be removed from consideration. The judge then would sentence Arias to spend her entire life behind bars or to be eligible for release after 25 years.
