Kaaawa blogger tries to track down burglar

KAAAWA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A burglar broke into the home of a well-known Hawaii blogger and journalist, but the thief didn't realize that he was being photographed the whole time.

A man burglarized the Kaaawa home shared by Ian Lind and his wife shortly before noon on Friday. According to Lind, the thief climbed in through a window and spent ten minutes inside, using a pillowcase from the bed to hold all of his loot.

"(He) immediately found all of her jewelry, took one of our cameras. Took coins, pocket change that piles up," said Lind.

At first, Lind was depressed. Then he got angry. When he discovered that his wireless camera had captured pictures of the crime, he posted them on his blog in case someone recognizes the burglar.

"You can buy these web cameras that are motion detectors and they're pretty cheap, and this has been sitting in our house running without paying attention for months and months and months. Now, it has come in handy," Lind said.

Lind said this is the third time their home has been burglarized in the 25 years they've lived in Kaaawa.

They added a safe after the last break-in, but the crook still got away with some valuables.

"Having the picture and being able to know we're going to get this person helps you get the energy to get through it," said Lind.

The photos have gone viral on social media. Lind is now fielding calls from across Oahu, neighbor islands, even the West Coast. He said a couple of possible suspects have been identified. He has already passed along their names to police. Lind is offering a $100 reward for information leading to the burglar's arrest.
