A High Surf Advisory is now in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for north and west shores, and until 6 a.m. Tuesday for east-facing shores around the islands.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory for:
North and West shores of Niihau and Kauai
North shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui
East shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island.
Forecasters said for east shores, waves of 8 to 12 feet are possible through Monday night. North shore waves are expected in the 10 to 15 foot range through Sunday night. West shore waves will come in at 8 to 12 feet on Kauai and Niihau.
Impacts from the waves will be moderate, with strong breaking waves and shore break, along with strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.
Beachgoers, surfers and swimmers should heed all advice from ocean safety officials and to be careful.
