Traffic Alert: H-1 Freeway overnight closures and Vineyard Boulevard repaving

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Driver beware. The State's ramping up work on the H-1 Freeway at the same time a massive repaving project starts through town.

Vineyard Boulevard repaving starts March 24th while overnight shutdowns begin on the H-1 westbound Sunday, March 16th.

In the words of State Highways Administrator Alvin Takeshita, "We have a lot of catching up to do."

The State and City are playing catch up repaving many of Oahu's busiest roads, including the H-1.

Department of Transportation Director Glenn Okimoto explained what will be happening, saying "We're going to be closing down the Westbound H1 all the lanes so we can get a lot of work done."

Overnight shutdowns start Sunday between Vineyard and Halona, from 8pm to 5am.

Takeshita said the DOT is trying to minimize the headache for drivers, but said, "The biggest challenge of all is the impact to traffic so we're taking all our gloves off right now."

The State will repave 10.5 miles along Vineyard Boulevard, a road used by 35-thousand vehicles a day.

Vineyard was last resurfaced in 1995. Starting March 24th, lane closures may be necessary as DOT repaves from Palama to the H-1 onramp, weekdays from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Crews will also install energy efficient traffic signals, address cracks in the sidewalk and, and extend left lanes at two problem intersections, Liliha and Palama.

Complicating your commute, Honolulu's Mayor is also fast tracking road work, with a plan to resurface 300 miles this year.

Mayor Kirk Caldwell said, "We're going to be going to Beretania. That's full depth construction. Foot and a half down. That means it takes longer."

Okimoto knows the work will create congestion for commuters, saying "We know there's a lot of work going on. There's a lot of work coming up. We want to really thank them for their patience."

The Vineyard repaving should take 9 months. Meantime, the DOT urges drivers to use Nimitz Highway or Dillingham Boulevard instead.

The H-1 project should wrap in July. That's when the City plans to start work on Beretania.
