Brown Water Advisory issued for Waimea Bay

Posted: Updated:
WAIMEA BAY, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Department of Health issued a Brown Water Advisory for Waimea Bay on Oahu's North Shore Wednesday afternoon.

The advisory comes after built up storm water breached through the sand berm, discharging turbid waters into the bay.

Health officials advise the public to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals, and associated flood debris.

Several people have contracted Leptospirosis after coming into contact with water at the discharge site, the health department says. For more information on Leptospireosis, go to:  http://health.hawaii.gov/about/files/2013/06/leptobrochure.pdf
