Hawaii considers using old pipeline for biofuel

Posted: Updated:

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources is considering transporting biofuel from ships through an old pipeline on the Big Island.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald said Tuesday that the department is expected to consider the proposal Friday.

The pipe was built in the 1960s and was originally used for asphalt products.

The department says Hoku Kai Biofuels LLC bought the asphalt plant property and wants to use the pipe to get biofuels from ships to storage tanks.

Final approval would require an environmental impact statement to find no significant effects from the pipeline.

The department's board is considering a 65-year easement.

Officials for the Hilo based company say it is seeking customers to buy the fuel. Spokesman Chuck Barker says the company has spoken with Hawaii Electric Light Co.
