Hawaii Republican lawmakers have little to show

HONOLULU (AP) - Of nearly 400 bills the Hawaii House sent the Senate this year, only five were introduced by Republicans. And the party was shut out with nothing passed from its minority caucus package.

The dismal numbers underscore the futility Republicans find in the lopsided state Legislature. Democrats outnumber them 44 to seven in the House, and 24 to one in the Senate.

Republican lawmakers say they try to build coalitions with Democrats but do not receive much support on their own bills in return. For House Republicans, just getting bills scheduled for committee hearings can feel like a victory.

Lone Republican Senator Sam Slom says he spends most of his time just trying to defeat bad legislation.
