Maui police investigate critical pedestrian accident in Haiku

HAIKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui police are investigating a pedestrian accident that happened on Kokomo Road, north of Nehe Place, shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

The 52-year-old female pedestrian was walking northbound on the roadway around a utility truck when a 2002 Lexus RX300 hit her while traveling north, police said. The pedestrian, a Haiku resident, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The 65-year-old female driver and her juvenile male passenger were both wearing seatbelts at the time. But it has not yet been determined whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors.

Kokomo Road was reopened shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
