A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle shortly after midnight on Saturday in the Waimalu area.

Officials say the accident happened around 12:24 a.m. fronting the Waimalu Shopping Center.

The victim was reportedly crossing Kamehameha Highway when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver allegedly fled the scene.

According to police officials, the man was apparently 79 feet away from the marked crosswalk at the time of the accident.

According to Emergency Medical Services, the pedestrian was transported to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

Police closed the eastbound lanes on Kamehameha Highway between Hekaha and Kanuku Streets. Roads were reopened at approximately 3:15 a.m.

Police say speed may be a factor, however it is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The investigation is still ongoing.
