HONOLULU (AP) - City councilmembers from Honolulu and Nagaoka, Japan want to deepen their affiliation as sister cities.

The city councils from both cities are signing a friendship memo on Friday, laying out ways they'll work together in the future.

The memo calls on the local leaders to promote peace by developing exchange activities between both cities. The programs will touch on culture, education, sport, politics, economics and other areas.

The memo says the leaders hope to further friendly relations between Japan and the United States.

Honolulu Council Chairman Ernest Martin says the city leaders have much to learn from one another.

The leaders plan a conference to discuss their affiliation.
