Kuhio Highway has been reopened in both directions following a three-car crash on Tuesday that killed one and injured three, Kauai police say.
KPD closed the highway, just south of Wailapa Road, to investigate and clear the road after the crash happened at approximately 7:25 p.m. Police said a Ford pickup truck was traveling north and sideswiped a Jeep SUV that was going south. The Ford then struck and oncoming Dodge SUV, causing the Dodge to overturn.
The male driver of the Dodge sustained injuries from the crash and was later pronounced dead. The male passenger was initially transported to the Wilcox Memorial Hospital and later air transported to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.
The male driver of the Ford and female driver of the Jeep were transported to Wilcox with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Kuhio Highway was reopened at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
This was Kauai's first traffic fatality for 2014.
