Hawaii to celebrate 'Fat Tuesday' with malasadas

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - New Orleans may be holding Mardis Gras celebrations throughout the city on Tuesday, but Hawaii will be celebrating "Fat Tuesday" by devouring an island favorite: malasadas.

Damien Memorial School will be serving up thousands of malasadas in its annual "Fat Tuesday" fundraiser from 6:30 to 11 a.m.

The preparations started after midnight and many volunteers were in the kitchen before dawn, a school official said.

Last year, Damien sold 6,000 malasadas before 9 a.m. Proceeds from the sale will go towards an upcoming construction project on the school's campus.
