(HawaiiNewsNow) Yukie Ohashi has been an active American Red Cross volunteer since 2008 and has assisted the Red Cross both locally and nationally.
Yukie recruits new volunteers and assists clients who have lost their homes due to disasters such as fires or floods and makes sure that their emergencies needs are met.
Most of her work is done in the Volcano area of the Big Island, but she's been everywhere.
In fact, she's helped with national disaster relief efforts, working with the victims of Super Storm Sandy in New York:
"They were families, elderly, the elderly people, vulnerable people, fragile people. I think every single one of us, our hearts broke.
She also traveled to Arizona to assist those recovering from the 2013 wildfires.
"Many of them of course came back to their properties and found ash on the ground. That's all that was left."
Yukie is always willing to help no matter what the job is.
That's why she's the Red Cross of Hawaii East Hawaii volunteer of the year.
