Civil Defense to conduct monthly siren testing

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii residents may hear siren alarms on Monday as the state Civil Defense conducts its monthly test of its outdoor siren warning system.

The test -- in conjunction with the live audio broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System -- will include a steady one-minute tone on all sirens that will start at approximately 11:45 a.m. The steady tone, according to the Civil Defense, is used to alert the public of emergencies that may pose threats to life and properties. Besides natural hazards, the EAS could be used for terrorist incidents or acts of war.

Siren tests and EAS broadcasts are normally conducted simultaneously on the first working day of the month.
