Wicked winter rough on vendors, produce at The West Side Market

The wicked winter is turning The West Side Market into one big frozen food section!

The City of Cleveland is allowing space heaters, which are normally prohibited, inside because of the severe cold.

The temperatures are so cold inside the famed market, that vendors are wearing multiple layers to try to stave off the freezing conditions.

Nick Puilypie of Kaufman Poultry said, "I have like two pairs of paints, double socks and a couple layers of sweaters."

Those working behind coolers of meats or seafood, that must stay on ice, aren't the only ones shivering.

Those working hot food stands are bundled up, too.

One vendor was seen warming his hands by a hot pan.

"This isn't a heated building," expressed Rob Chase of Crepes de Luxe, "so working in here is a pretty cold endeavor right now."

The cold is actually beneficial to much of the produce that needs to stay chilled, but the same can't be said for the delicate fruits and veggies.

Spinach, grapes, avocados and bananas are among the foods that need special care.

"When conditions get this cold we have to take a lot downstairs," explained Jason Scott with Brothers Produce. "We have to make sure the heat stays on at all times especially on items like strawberries and grapes because if they freeze customers don't want (to buy) them frozen."

Already this winter some have lost significant volumes of fruit to the sub zero temperatures.

Since customers won't buy frozen fruit the vendors have had to eat the profits.

Once the crowds come through though the mood heats up, slightly.

Again, Puilypie, "In the morning it's cold. Then people walk in here and it gets a little warmer."

So it's definitely safe to say that just about everyone is ready for spring!
