HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
What was once the "slimdown secret" of the stars has caught on across the country. Juicing is so big, there are now 350 juice bars in the State.
Fresh pressed juice gained a new generation who saw the power of juicing in the popular documentary "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead."
Joe Cross inspired others to jump into juicing after he lost nearly 100 pounds on a 60 day juice diet.
"'Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead' basically revolutionized the juicing world" says Extract Juice Bar owner David Turrentine.
He's another success story. "Within the 8-9 months I've been juicing, I just lost 50 pounds."
Five months ago, he opened Extract Juice Bar in Downtown Honolulu and now sells 125 juices every day.
"It's just fruits and vegetables in its pure form" says Turrentine. "When we make a juice, it's a whole bowl of greens. A salad that you can just drink very quickly and get all those nutrients."
Blue Tree café Brand Creator Juliann Gigi adds, "What's so good about juicing is the nutrients go directly to your bloodstream so you don't have to wait to digest the fibers."
The Kakaako based bar pumps out more than 3-hundred juices daily, that tout benefits from weight loss to detoxification.
Customers pay 40 dollars a day for Blue Tree's custom cleanse. In the morning, customers 6 different blends, with a big focus on greens such as kale and spinach.
A doctor stressed to us juice diets can have good results if you stick to mostly vegetables. You must limit fruits high in sugar because they can spike glucose, mess up your metabolism, and ironically, even trigger weight gain.
Gigi explained why, saying "Sugar as we all know turns into carbohydrates. Does not help you lose weight basically so we really do try to reduce the amount of sugar."
Extract created its raw cleanse program, with help from a PhD.
Turrentine said, "We start you with natural sugars, let your body build off it, then kind of build into more ginger-based drinks, really build your immunity, kind of wake you up, maintain your metabolism."
Both bars recommend phasing out fruit, and piling on the greens to drink yourself healthy.
