(CNN) - Two security officers have been found dead on the Maersk Alabama container ship, police in the Seychelles said Wednesday.

The vessel, portrayed in the movie Captain Phillips, was moored at Port Victoria in the Indian Ocean archipelago. The men, who are Americans, both 44, were found dead on Tuesday. CNN first learned about this on Twitter.

Police in the Seychelles said they were part of a 24-member crew that arrived on Sunday and were expected to leave Tuesday. The two men worked for Trident Security Firm USA, police said.

"A postmortem will be carried out this week in order to establish the cause of their sudden deaths," police said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

U.S. Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Daniel Tremper said the guard had been notified about the deaths of two U.S. citizens and is investigating.

"We are monitoring the report involving the two citizens and we offer our condolences to the two families. An investigator from Coast Guard Activities Europe is engaged in a Coast Guard investigation, but due to the nature of the investigation that will be about all that we can provide right now."

The bodies were found by a colleague who went to check in on one of the two men in a ship cabin about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Seychelles police said.

The vessel was moored in Port Victoria, authorities said.

The film Captain Phillips stars Tom Hanks and is based on the real-life events surrounding the 2009 hijacking of the Maersk Alabama by armed Somali pirates. The incident ended in a rescue operation by Navy SEALs. Three of the pirates who were on a lifeboat with the captain were killed and the fourth was captured.
