Family, friends and members of the community joined together to scatter the ashes of Sergeant Drew Scobie at Makapuu Beach Park on Sunday morning.
Sgt. Drew Scobie of Kailua died when his plane crashed on its way back from a nighttime surveillance mission. He was 25.
An "Aloha 'Oe" scattering of ashes ceremony began at approximately 8:30 a.m., followed by a paddle out at 10 a.m.
Scobie was born and raised in Kailua and joined the Hawaii Army National Guard in 2009. He was deployed to Afghanistan in October 2013 as a Fire Direction Operator. He flew on the MC-12 with a primary mission to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support to ground troops.
Scobie is survived by his wife, who is pregnant, and their four-year-old son.
