New Emissions Standards Affect Moving to California

The new regulations are designed to reduce diesel emissions made by trucks within or entering California, with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 14,000 pounds or more.
As the average-sized tractor trailer can weigh up to 40,000 pounds, these regulations will affect a significant number of businesses servicing California. UniGroup, the parent company of United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit, estimates that only 20% of tractors with commerce in and out of California met the new CARB standards last year.
Meeting standards set forth by CARB comes with costs that many moving companies find prohibitive. Replacing a tractor can cost up to $100,000, while retrofitting a CARB-compliant filter could cost anywhere from $16-25,000. When faced with these expenses, many smaller movers will simply opt to stop servicing California, or shut down operations entirely.
Other states such as Washington have enacted similar regulations to Californias, but at a much less restrictive pace. Joseph Blaine, Corporate Operations Manager at Continental Van Lines, Inc. has noted the change.
Other port states are much more even handed regarding emission standards, Blaine says. Washington State has been easing into emission standards at its ports by requiring 2007 and later model year engines to be used by 2018; a much more reasonable timeframe.
In light of the new CARB restrictions, UniGroup has found an alternative in Full-Service Container or FSC moves. FSC moves are ideal for small-to-medium shipments, and involve packing items in containers and shipping via CARBcompliant carriers to California destinations. Continental President Greg Blaine explained that soon UniGroup will have the capability to service large shipments via FSC as well.
Continental Van Lines, Inc. has thoroughly prepared for CARBs new standards, and delivery and transit times throughout 2014 will remain unaffected when using their services.
