WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The Honolulu Zoo announced Thursday that one of the lion cubs at the zoo is making a permanent move to Texas.
The male African Lion cub, which goes by the names Kaikane and Kekoa, will be sent to Cameron Park Zoo in Waco to mate with other lions. Zoo officials say, as participants of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), they are following recommendations to diversify the genetic pool of captive animals.
"It is sad to see him leave, but it is also a proud moment knowing we helped raise a healthy, well mannered young lion that will someday be the King of his own pride in Texas," said a Honolulu Zoo official on their Facebook page.
The 14-month-old cub is now a healthy 251 pounds. He was born at the Honolulu Zoo along with two female lion cubs who will remain in Hawaii.
