Honolulu mayor proposes $10 garbage pickup fee

HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell is proposing a $10 monthly fee for curbside garbage pickup in a bill to be considered by the city council.

City environmental services director Lori Kahikina says most U.S. cities charge extra for the service. Kauai County residents pay $12 every month and Maui County residents $18.

The bill proposes that the fee begin in January. It would not apply to people who pay for private haulers.

The Honolulu Star Advertiser reports the measure is projected to generate $21.6 million annually.

Council Budget Chairwoman Ann Kobayashi said she and other members want to hear the rationale for the increase.

She says she wonders what will happen if a household doesn't pay the fee, and whether refuse will pile up in front of a non-paying home.
