More power outages expected across South Carolina

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division is warning residents across the state to stay safe and warm because more power outages are expected.

Emergency responders, along with the state's electricity providers are asking residents to stay patient as line crews begin to make restorations. The continuing freezing rain and ice accumulation is making it difficult for crews to make repairs, but emergency crews are offering these helpful tips if you find yourself stuck without power.

1. Do not call 911 for power outages, instead reach out to your power company unless you have a life-threatening emergency.

2. Stay away from downed power lines. Always assume any downed power line is live and stay away. Always report a downed line to your power company.

3. Use extreme caution with supplemental heaters and generators.

4. Do not run a generator inside a home or garage. Keep them 20 feet away from your home to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

5. Use only flashlights for emergency lighting.

6. Never use your oven as a source of heat.

7. Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment or electronics in use when the power went out.

8. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep your food as fresh as possible.

9. Keep your mobile devices charged and use the phone for emergencies only.

10. Provide plenty of fresh, cool water for your pets.
