HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Thousands of walkers and runners are expected to take part in the 30th Annual Great Aloha Run on Monday.
The 8.15-mile course starts at Aloha Tower, winds its way down Nimitz Highway, Kamehameha Highway and on to Aloha Stadium.
Most downtown streets close to vehicular traffic just before 4 a.m. including Nuuanu to Punchbowl and from Beretania to Nimitz Highway.
The race begins at 7 a.m.
The 2013 Great Aloha Run had nearly 22,000 participants.
The Great Aloha Run has been recognized as one of the top "100 Great Road Races" by Runner's World Magazine. Over the past 29 years, the 'run' has raised over $10 million for more than 150 non-profit health and human service organizations and community groups throughout Hawaii.
GAR has divisions for elites, age groups, wheelchair and handcycle competitors, Sounds of Freedom (military running in formation) and those who just want to walk the course with friends and socialize along the way in the Back of the Pack.
Thousands are expected at this weekend's race expo at the Blaisdell Center's Exhibition Hall where runners will be able to pick up their race numbers and race information.
