Honolulu mayor travels to Philippines

HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell is visiting the Philippines.

Caldwell's office says the purpose of the visit is to strengthen ties, promote business opportunities and renew sister-city relationships.

Caldwell was expected to arrive in the Philippines on Tuesday. According to a schedule provided by his office, his travels in the country will include visits to Vigan, Ilocos Sur and San Fernando Pampanga.

He'll also attend business forums and speak at a workshop about investment opportunities in Hawaii.

He returns to Honolulu next week.

Department of Budget and Fiscal Services Director Nelson Koyanagi Jr. is acting mayor until Thursday because Managing Director Ember Lee Shin is attending a meeting in Oregon. Shinn returns on Friday and will be acting mayor until Caldwell returns on Feb. 18.
