HAWAII KAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Honolulu Police Department was called to investigate a suspicious package fronting Hawaii Kai Shopping Center at 2:30 p.m.

Part of the shopping center and some residences in the area were evacuated as the bomb squad investigated the item in question.

Firefighters driving on Keahole Street initially noticed the suspicious box measuring 14 inches by 11 inches and leaning against a light pole.  It had writing on it, including the words 'dirty cops'.

"That's a red flag," says HFD Captain Terry Selig, "Perhaps somebody with an agenda."

The box had a plastic bag inside with some kind of liquid.  Further tests show the liquid was from food.

"Bomb squad officers told us we had to leave," says Matt Miyake, who works at the Town Pump Liquor Store in the shopping center.  He says the closure definitely hurt business but he is grateful that police and firefighters didn't take any chances.

Keahole Street in Hawaii Kai was closed in both directions from the Hawaii Kai Shopping center (near the bridge) to Hawaii Kai Drive until about 5:15 pm.
