A 64-year-old Hanalei man is in critical condition tonight following a two-car crash that shut down Kuhio Highway, just south of the Hanalei bridge, for over three hours.
According to police, the crash occurred at roughly 3:45 p.m., when a Nissan sedan was heading down the hill toward Hanalei town and crossed the center line near the hairpin turn. The car was then struck on its passenger side by and oncoming Jeep SUV.
The driver and passenger of the SUV sustained minor injuries and did not require medical treatment.
The driver of the sedan sustained critical injuries and was transported to Wilcox Hospital.
Kuhio Highway was closed in both directions from roughly 4 p.m. to allow Traffic Safety officers to conduct their investigation and clear the scene. The highway was reopened in both directions at around 7:30 p.m.
