Dee and Jay Barber say playing with each is other is easy.
It makes sense, considering they've been by each others' sides since birth.
"It's kind of like we're the same person in a different body," says Dee.
"We don't really have to talk," Jay says about the duo's on-court connection. "It's like playing with another me. We think the same. We play the same. We have the same mentality. It's like playing with the same person."
The duo has helped lead the Knights to the top spot in the GISA AAA rankings, and back in the state title chase.
And it's not just Deerfield's opponents who are doing double takes. Even head coach Gordy Gruhl says he has trouble telling them apart.
"When I have them together, I can kind of tell them apart," he laughs. "But if I just see one of them, I've got no clue."
The pair joke they haven't traded jerseys yet, but it sounds like they don't need to.
Gruhl and the brothers admit the coach will sometimes get on one after the other's bad play.
What isn't confusing to Gruhl is the Barbers' ability.
"We try to get the ball to one of them and get it up the floor," Gruhl says.
He says the two are almost interchangeable at each guard position, and he credits them for their hard work on each side of the floor.
"They're excellent defenders. Both of them play extremely hard on the defensive end," he says. "They really improved their shooting over the past year."
Jay says the connection he and his brother have on the court is starting to rub off on teammates.
"Me and my brother have so much chemistry, they all blend in," the younger of the twins says. "They fit in with us."
"They're two of the hardest working players I've ever coached," Gruhl says. "They're not real verbal, but they lead by that example."
Now the brothers hope to end their Knight careers as state champs.
"We came up short last year, so that's our goal," Dee says.
The Knights take the floor again Friday night when they travel to Tiftarea Academy.
