HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A total of 19 pedestrians were killed and an additional eight were critically injured in traffic collisions on Oahu last year. The Hawaii Police Department is stepping things up with a Pedestrian safety campaign to raise awareness. Anita Nihei was the victim of a driver who was not paying attention. She was hit in the crosswalk while walking her dog. She is here on Sunrise to tell her story as a pedestrian accident survivor and to promote pedestrian safety.
HPD is partnering with Walk Wise Hawaii for a pedestrian safety and enforcement campaign starting January 24th to February 14th. Police officers will be on the look out for and citing pedestrians and drivers who commit crosswalk and other pedestrian-related violations. Officers will be deployed to intersections and crosswalks across Oahu, with some of the officers posing as civilian pedestrians.
