KAHALA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Nicolas Nakano has 22 prior convictions, 13 of those are felonies for crimes like kidnapping, burglary and robbery.
But the 32-year old career criminal is now facing more serious charges, including attempted murder after a chase in Kahala Thursday night.
Police sources say Nakano was wearing a bullet proof vest when he took undercover officers on a chase. He crashed his white sedan on Makaiwa Street and started running. Law enforcement officers caught up to him a short time later, but while trying to put handcuffs on him, sources say, Nakano grabbed a gun, and fired it backwards. An alert Honolulu Police officers was able to react just in time, narrowly avoiding being shot at point blank range.
"I heard couple gunshots, so I was locking up my house," says Lyle Hamasaki, who lives right at the intersection where the crash happened. "It was like a gang war out here," he says.
Nakano was wanted for violating the conditions of parole. He was released from jail in October of last year, but in December, he abruptly moved out of the halfway house he was living in. Nakano also tested positive for meth.
Undercover officers from the HPD, US Marshals Service, ATF and Sheriff's Deputies tracked down Nakano in the Kahala area about seven-thirty Thursday night. Nakano apparently realized he was being followed and that's when the chase was on.
Sources close to the investigation say HPD detectives have connected Nakano to two recent armed robberies but are trying to see if he's committed more. There have been a number of armed robberies of convenience stores and fast food restaurants lately.
Nakano remains hospitalized at the Queens Hospital. He was seriously hurt in the car crash and has multiple broken bones, mostly in his face.
