ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) -

UPDATE: WIS will provide the latest information here.

A student was killed on the South Carolina State University campus after a shooting Friday afternoon.

At a 4 p.m. news conference, SC State police officials said the shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. outside Hugine Suites.

Police locked down the campus a short time later while they pursued four suspects in connection with the shooting. That lockdown has since been lifted.

Orangeburg Department of Public Safety Capt. Mike Adams told TheTandD.com police are assisting SC State officers with the manhunt.

At least two other shootings have taken place at SC State University in the past 20 years.

In February 1994, 14 shots were fired in a campus dorm. Two students and a male visitor suffered injuries, but all survived. Marcus White, who was a freshman at the time, was sentenced to three years in prison with three years' probation.

In April 2011, 22-year-old Jonathan Bailey was shot during a drug deal in the university parking lot. Then 17-year-old Julian Young was charged in the murder. Young was sentenced in 2012 to 35 years in prison.

South Carolina State is a historically black university founded in 1896.

This is not the first incident on a college campus this week. On Tuesday, Cody Cousins, 23, allegedly shot and stabbed 21-year-old Andrew F. Boldt at Purdue University.  No one else was injured in the incident, and officials believe Cousins targeted Boldt, although a motive is not yet known.
