HOUSTON (KHOU/CBS) - A popular furniture store is handing out $600,000 in refunds to customers because of a promotion tied to the Super Bowl.
"Mattress Mack" of Gallery Furniture, known for his energized television commercials, attempted to capitalize on the NFL division championships with a hefty promise. Customers who spent at least $5,000 during a four-day period could have all their money back if they correctly guessed the two teams that advanced to the Super Bowl.
Troy Moreland saw the commercial, bought $12,000 worth of merchandise from the store and guessed the winning teams correctly. He wasn't the only one.
More than 100 people spent the required amount of money and picked the Seahawks and Broncos to go to the big game.
"We were not planning on buying furniture from Gallery Furniture until we saw that," Moreland said. "I literally ran out the door screaming that we won because all of our neighbors knew we were doing it."
Gallery Furniture owner Mattress Mack, whose real name is Jim McIngvale, said he and a few sales people came up with the idea.
But he admitted he never imagined so many would get it right.
"I took a deep breath and gulped in my throat - $600,000 of free furniture to our customers," McIngvale said. "Do we make these sour lemons into lemonade?" And 80 percent of the customers were smart and picked the right teams. I was not only surprised, I was shocked. But after I got over it I realized we made a lot of customers very happy."
"We're thinking about doing it for the big game but haven't decided yet."
