SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Two arrests have been made after an altercation in a Springfield home Wednesday led to gunshots flying throughout the neighborhood.

Multiple homes in the area of St. James Ave. and Bowdoin St. were struck by the gunfire, according to Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney.

Springfield police officers who responded to the scene spotted two men that matched the description of the suspects fleeing across State St. near Terrance St. The officers chased and detained the men and eventually seized a .40 caliber handgun from the suspects, Delaney said.

"Back at the scene of the shooting investigating officers discovered that five townhouse apartments were struck by bullets fired by the duo, and some of the projectiles went through windows," Delaney said in the news release, adding that no injuries were reported as a result of the gunfire.

Both suspects were positively identified by witnesses at the crime scene. Through their investigation, police determined that a fight broke out in a St. James St. home and one of the suspects was "beat up." The suspects then left and obtained the handgun that was allegedly fired.

Rakeem Nelson, 21, of 768 Belmont Ave., and William Duke, 20, of 116 St. James Ave., were both charged with carrying a loaded firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a home, six counts of assault by means of a dangerous weapon, and six counts of malicious damage over $250.

Nelson was recently arrested on January 15 on Island Pond Rd. for assault by means of a handgun. He was released after his arraignment on those pending charges, Delaney said.

Both suspects are self-proclaimed gang members in Springfield. They will be arraigned Thursday in Springfield District Court.
