HONOLULU (AP) - The longtime director of the Miss Hawaii Pageant has died.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Thomas "Thom" McGarvey Jr. died Jan. 8 at an assisted living facility in Oahu. He was 70.
A pageant official, Ray Abregano, said McGarvey had liver cancer.
McGarvey served as executive director of the pageant for three decades, during which he helped establish a foundation to give scholarships for women aspiring to win the Miss America crown. He also helped lift the pageant from a competition struggling for visibility to a television broadcast with a live audience.
Plans for a memorial service were pending.
