The Department of Parks and Recreation announced Thursday that the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is closed effective immediately due to emergency maintenance.

Repair crews are on the scene working to resolve the issue as expeditiously as possible and a determination will be made later Thursday afternoon as to whether the popular East Honolulu attraction will re-open Friday.

City officials say the popular east Oahu shoreline must close because of a problem with the restrooms.  The toilets are not flushing.  Approximately 1,000 people were at the beach when the issue was discovered.  According to City officials, the beachgoers will be allowed to stay for the day, but have been warned that the restrooms are off limits.
