Bridgeport police identify shooting victim

Bridgeport police have identified the victim who was shot during a robbery in the city's North End late Tuesday night.

Investigators say Geraldo Costa, 33, was shot in the head while struggling with intruders inside his home. He was listed in critical but stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

Police also said they believe the house was specifically targeted and the incident was not random.

Now the search is on for whoever pulled the trigger.

"I looked out the window and all I saw was flashing lights," Bridgeport resident Hammond Duncan said. "I went into the bathroom, looked out the back window and saw the flashing lights on Saunders Street. Then all of a sudden they're putting up yellow tape."

For Duncan, who said he has lived in the neighborhood for more than 30 years, the shooting is cause for concern. Police cruisers and crime tape closed off Pond Street at Woodrow Avenue for hours when police said they found the 33-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police said the shooting was reported inside a Pond Street home during the apparent robbery.

"There's police walking up the street, going behind my house and the other house," Duncan said. "They were looking and stayed here all night long."

But while police searched everywhere for a possible suspect, they had no luck. Throughout the morning investigators were taking pictures and collecting evidence from the small home.

Neighbors said this one hits too close to home.

"It makes me uncomfortable," Duncan said. "It seems like this neighborhood in the last five years has really changed. Even though we have a couple of police officers living on the street, it's still getting a little rough."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police.
