HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - "My mission is simply to introduce Hawaii taro to the world".  That is the pledge of Hawaii Taro Company owner Robert Mitnick.

He's now one step closer.

Mitnick's company and his signature product "Maui Taro Burgers" is expanding into California.  Three Los Angeles Whole Foods Markets will stock the burgers in their freezer sections.

The burgers are all natural, non-GMO, gluten free, soy free and "very importantly, its additive free. There are zero, zero, zero binders.  There are no additives.  There's no nothing" he said.

Additionally, the taro is all sourced locally, coming from Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Moloka'i and the Big Island.

Mitnick says the expansion will help protect agricultural land.

"We don't want to see condo's all the way to Hana and so on and so forth".

Mitnick became Hawaii's first recipient of a Whole Foods Market low interest loan that promotes local business.

He used the funds to build up his infrastructure.  The loan is, however, about much more than growing a business.

"This is particularly exciting because of course taro has such a significant place in our culture and our history and in our environmental future in Hawaii" said Claire Sullivan of Whole Foods Market.
